Kasia and I had taken a trip down to Florida (which actually resembled Arizona) and we decided to climb up into one of the canyons to go bike riding. As we were climbing we had discussed how we may want to move there since it was just so breathtaking.
As we approached the top of a gigantic rock I could tell that it was becoming much too steep to turn and climb back down so I just hoped that when we reached the top there would be a way to get back onto solid ground.
Kasia had become overheated and by the time I was able to push her up to the top she had become despondent and slumped down onto the rock. Unaware of her situation, I feared she would wake back up and try to get up so I stood still with her tightly between my feet.
As I looked around I realized that there was a spot where we could jump to solid ground but there was a five foot crevasse and I didn't want to risk it. We must have been hundreds of feet up and the rock we were on was about 15 feet in circumference so at this point I decided to just stay still and call 911.
I took out my cell phone and dialed the emergency button all the time realizing how much trouble this was going to get us into. A woman answered the phone and I had to try with all my might to keep composure. "Hi, my name is Kelly and my girlfriend...er...umm..WIFE are on top of a rock in the canyon and we have no way of getting down."
The first thing out of her mouth was a muttered "Yessssss" and I knew that she was happy to get such an exciting call. She put me on hold and looking around one last time for a way off the rock I noticed a small path that led down a trail. I stabilized Kasia on the rock as much as possible and ran down the trail as quickly as I could until I approached a gated house which blocked the trail. The gate was open and I ran inside to the back window and was able to open it up and climb through, and once I was the trail again I knew we were safe.
As I ran back to the rock I was becoming angry that I was still on hold with the operator because I wanted to tell her that we were okay and no longer needed assistance. But as I ran I could hear the emergency helicopter roaring over the tree tops, and by the time I arrived there were about 20 various emergency personnel rushing around the scene. Kasia had already been pulled onto solid ground and although I knew we would probably be charged hundreds of dollars for this, at least Kasia was going to be okay.
